The Appalachians are older than dinosaurs - once as tall as the Himalayas are today. Your local forest probably has fewer tree species than one single Appalachian valley does. The trail that runs along these mountains is so long it takes most hikers about five months to finish. That famous blue haze you see over the ridges comes from the trees themselves breathing out into the air.
